by Jared Thomas

One of the best things about living in Merritt, BC, is how close you are to some of the most beautiful lakes and recreation spots in the entire Nicola Valley. Whether you’re into fishing, kayaking, hiking, or just soaking up the view, Merritt offers endless options for day trips that are just a short drive away.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the top lakes and recreation areas near Merritt — complete with drive times, day-use areas, and what makes each spot special.

Bluey Lake

  • Drive Time from Merritt: ~40 minutes (4x4 or AWD recommended — narrow gravel road)

  • Highlights: Crystal-clear water, perfect for canoeing, kayaking, or paddle boarding. Bluey is known for its incredible fishing — rainbow trout, kokanee, and brook trout are all common.

  • Day Use: Rustic day-use areas with shoreline access. No big facilities here — it’s more about peace and quiet in a natural setting.

  • Good to Know: Not suitable for larger trailers due to the access road. Ideal for a true back-to-nature experience.

  • Day Use: Multiple designated day-use areas with picnic tables, pit toilets, and shoreline access. Great for family outings.

  • Good to Know: Popular for fly fishing and small watercraft. There’s also a campground if you decide to turn your day trip into an overnight stay.
